Packing starts June 15

Walla Walla sweet onions are almost here

The 2021 Walla Walla Sweet Onion season is almost here. Keystone Fruit Marketing, a division of Progressive Produce, will start packing its sweet Walla Walla River Sweet Onions around June 15th and run until the third week in August.

“We had a mild winter and excellent growing conditions, so we expect a bigger crop than 2020 with good yields,” said Dan Borer, sales manager.

Although they’re available for only a short time during the summer, Walla Walla Sweet Onions have recognition giving retailers opportunities to capture additional sales.

“Walla Walla Sweet Onions are known for their sweet and mild flavor, making them the perfect addition to everyone’s favorite summertime foods. They’re great for burgers, sausage, sandwiches, salads and grilling,” said M. Andrea Scroggs, sales and marketing manager. “Cross merchandising in the meat department, or with tomatoes, salads, peppers and squash, helps increase sales.”

New packaging
Be on the lookout for updated packaging! Walla Walla River Sweet Onions recently went through a rebrand reflective of the evolution of the grower group. It kept the tradition and history alive, while adding rich bold colors and a fresh take on elements of the original logo. Consumers will still recognize the mountains and river of the beautiful Walla Walla valley where the sweet onions are harvested by hand.
Also this season are Walla Walla Rosé Sweet Onions! These onions have the coloring of a red onion, with the sweetness of a sweet onion. Walla Walla Rosé Sweet Onions will be available from early July through August.

Walla Walla Rosé Sweet Onions have the coloring of a red onion with the sweetness of a sweet onion.

Keystone is proud to supply its customers with high-quality sweet onions 365 days of the year. “Our program has something for everyone…because life should be this sweet,” says Scroggs. Reach out to your Keystone or Progressive sales manager for more information.
