The exporter BDB Logic has made the first shipment of Hass avocado produced in the province of Santa Elena to the European Union. The shipment will arrive in Europe in the second week of June.
This is the first time that avocado producers from this region export their products. To achieve this, they received advice and guidance from national and foreign experts familiar with the production and export logistics of this crop.
Javier Davalos Barquet, the manager of the company, said this first container of Hass avocado would arrive in Madrid between June 9 and 11. From there, the fruit will be distributed to several important cities in Spain, such as Barcelona and San Sebastian, among others. Davalos also said that BDB Logic would export a total of 14 containers of Hass avocado.
Avocado production in the peninsula is carried out with the use of state-of-the-art drip irrigation, disease control, and packing facilities to achieve synergy between technology and human work.
The avocado crop demands extreme care in its production to prevent diseases, such as anthracnose, from affecting the fruit; this pest is very difficult to trace in the production, harvest, and post-harvest process and it only becomes visible when the fruit begins to ripen, Mr. Davalos stated. In fact, producers and exporters have had many problems because of anthracnose. To prevent this, producers should carry out post-harvest fumigations to avoid losses for investors.
The BDB Logic manager said he felt optimistic about the next five years. It's true that this is the first shipment they make to Europe. However, he is certain that, by the end of the year, they will have shipped the 14 containers they plan to export. He also said they had a strategic alliance with the importer, who is very enthusiastic about the quality of the fruit.
