Lidl overtakes Kaufland as biggest retailer in Romania
German discount supermarket chain Lidl overtook discount hypermarket chain Kaufland as the biggest retailer in Romania by turnover in 2020. Both Lidl and Kaufland are part of the German group Schwarz. Lidl, which entered the Romanian market ten years ago by taking over local supermarket network Plus, reached increased its business by a third in 2020 compared to an 8% increase for Kaufland. Lidl thus reached a turnover of RON 12.86 billion (EUR 2.659 bln) just above Kaufland’s RON 12.84 billion (EUR 2.653 bln), according to public data from the Finance Ministry.
However, Kaufland was the more profitable of the two, with a net profit of RON 970 mln (EUR 201 mln), up 14% year-on-year. Lidl recorded a net profit of RON 756 mln (EUR 156 mln), 54% higher than in 2019.

Grocery delivery startup Flink said on Friday it had raised $240 million from investors, just six months after the Berlin-based company was founded, and struck a strategic partnership with the Rewe Group supermarket chain. Flink is one of a crop of firms including Gorillas, Getir, and Weezy that have grown explosively during the COVID-19 pandemic with their promise to deliver groceries within minutes of an order being placed via a smartphone app. Its Series A funding round was led by Dutch-based consumer internet investor Prosus, San Francisco technology investor BOND, and Mubadala Capital, which is part of Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund.

France’s Casino expands Amazon partnership with collect services
French supermarket group Casino and U.S. e-commerce giant Amazon said on Thursday they were expanding a tie-up for grocery deliveries in an online food retail market that has become increasingly competitive. The Casino group caused a stir in 2018 when its upmarket Monoprix stores struck a deal with Amazon, considered one of the biggest rivals to retailers trying to boost their own e-commerce operations. The latest partnership would affect Casino-branded stores, and involves the roll-out of new click-and-collect services for Amazon Prime members. It will kick off in July in the French cities of Annecy and Clermont-Ferrand, and 180 food collection points will be rolled out across France by the summer of 2022, the companies said.

Kroger launches $5M, year supply of groceries giveaway for vaccinated customers, employees
Kroger has launched its $5 million and groceries for a year giveaway to motivate people to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Five people will be selected as $1 million winners and 50 participants will win groceries for a year, Kroger announced Thursday.
The winners will be selected over the next five weeks. The giveaway starts Thursday and runs through July 10.

CP All to roll out 700 more 7-Eleven stores in Thailand
CP All Plc, the operator of 7-Eleven convenience stores, plans to spend 11.5-12 billion baht this year to expand its business. Kriengchai Boonboapichart, the company’s chief financial officer, said 4-4.1 billion baht of total spending is for investment in new projects, subsidiaries and distribution centres, 3.8-4 billion is slated for store expansion, 2.4-2.5 billion is for store renovations, and the remaining 1.3-1.4 billion is for fixed assets and IT systems. The company plans to open 700 new convenience stores this year, on par with last year.

Albertsons boosts its supplier diversity program
Albertsons Companies continues to develop new strategies that help diverse suppliers do business with the grocery chain by increasing their access to working capital while reaffirming its commitment to racial equity. Given one of the biggest hurdles for small businesses is access to working capital, Albertsons said it is launching an expanded early payment program by partnering with C2FO, a secure online platform for working capital.
This partnership with C2FO will help determine the best time and terms for payments between Albertsons and suppliers.
