Standing fruit and vegetable crops damaged

Rain and hail hits crops in north Kashmir

Heavy rains, wind and hail have caused havoc in several parts of Handwara and Baramulla on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in damage to standing crops of vegetables and apple orchards.

According to eyewitnesses, heavy rains, accompanied with wind and hailstorm started in several areas of Baramulla and Handwara including in Rafiabad, Qaziabad, Rajwar, Ramhal and upper belt of Rafiabad and Handwara on Tuesday afternoon. These continued for about twenty minutes.

Apart from the damage to crops, the rooftops of several houses were also damaged in the areas and  several electricity poles and trees fell down to the ground, which caused disruptions to the supply of electricity. Local growers have appealed to the current government to compensate the farmers and apple growers who lost their crops.
