Mango exports from the Satkhira region of Bangladesh have finally begun for the 2021 season; the first shipment from the Himsagar Group has departed for three European countries. Some 4 tons of iceberg mangoes from Hafizur Rahman Grove were sent Italy, France and the UK, thanks to a special project called “Success” launched by Solidarid Network Asia with financial support from the Netherlands.
According to the Satkhira Department of Agricultural Extension, local mango growers are expecting a double increase in export orders from Europe this year, as the king of fruits is rapidly gaining popularity on the continent.
Mustafa Kamal, Deputy Commissioner of Satkhira: “As part of the successful project, export activities of mangoes and other vegetables from the Satkhira region will continue.” Last year, the Khiraspat mango of Chapainawabganj, known as Himsagar, has received the Geographical Indication (GI) mark as the third product of Bangladesh. The Khirsapat mango is one of the most delicious mangoes and accounts for 20–25% of the total mangoes produced in Bangladesh every year. This variety is exported annually to many countries in Europe and the Middle East.
