The pandemic, the recent cyclone and climate change overall have badly hit the pineapple market in Kerala state. Pineapple farmers are in distress as the prices of the fruit fall. Vendors are not ready to purchase pineapples from the farmers. Hence, the farmers have no idea about what to do with the crop, which is ready to harvest.
It is reported that the interruption of goods transport are also affected sales. The farmers have urged for immediate action from the government to solve the crisis. Although Horticorp has stated that it will directly procure pineapple from the farmers, it didn’t turn out to be a great success up til now, as Horticop lacks the facility to procure a huge load of pineapples. This means tons of pineapple is getting rotten in the gardens.
