US: Online grocery shopping grows amid ‘pandemic-induced channel stickiness’
About 60% of U.S. consumers now buy groceries online, and the same percentage of these shoppers plan to do so at the same frequency or more once the COVID-19 crisis subsides, according to a new study by Coresight Research. Of 1,652 U.S. adults polled in April, 59% said they’ve purchased groceries online in the past 12 months, up from 52% in 2020 and 36.8% in 2019, according to Coresight Research’s "U.S. Online Grocery Survey 2021: Post-Surge Prospects" report.

US: Hy-Vee opens store in Twin Cities area, plans other expansions
Hy-Vee, Inc. opened a new 77,000-square-foot store in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area on May 25. Hy-Vee continues its expansion in that region with another planned store opening in Maplewood, Minnesota, in June. The West Des Moines, Iowa-based retailer is also expected to unveil a new flagship location in Grimes, Iowa, in September, which reportedly will include a food hall, DSW shoes and the chain’s first in-store nail salon run by Columbus, Ohio-based W Nail Bar.

Rewe to invest strongly in Romania to 2029
Rewe, which operates the Penny banner in Romania, is set to invest RON5.1bln (US$835.1mln) in Romania by 2029 to expand the banner’s presence. The announcement came after Penny Romania recorded a 19% rise in its turnover in 2020 to RON4.73bln (US$774.5mln). Jumbo to open 3 more Belgian stores
A press release announces 3 new store openings for Jumbo in Belgium: 2 in the north-eastern province of Limburg (Zonhoven on 30 June and Heusden-Zolder on 14 July), with in between them a first store in West-Flanders (Zedelgem on 7 July). This would lift Jumbo's total to 11 Belgian stores, and the retailer confirms its earlier ambition to have 100 stores in Belgium in the long run.

UK: Asda and discounters top performers in slowing grocery market
The latest take-home grocery figures from Kantar show sales fell by 0.4% during the 12 weeks to 16 May as normal shopping behaviour started to return amid people socialising and eating out more. All 4 of the largest supermarkets gained market share. After lagging behind its rivals over the last year, Asda was the biggest winner this period, with sales up by 1.9% and share increasing from 14.1% to 14.4%.

Holland: Picnic jumps over Jumbo on Dutch online grocery market
Since 2015, the platform ‘Supermarkt & Ruimte’ has been researching the development of online grocery shopping in the Netherlands twice a year. Against the backdrop of the corona crisis, the findings are particularly interesting, as e-commerce in general received a solid boost from the pandemic. Albert Heijn continues to dominate the market. 41% of respondents in the survey say they do their online shopping there. Picnic is preferred by 27% of online shoppers, while Jumbo loses market share and falls back to 21%. Outside the top-3, Plus is the fastest grower.
