Cusco F1, early broccoli variety by HM.CLAUSE

May is when the planning of brassicas, and especially broccoli, takes place in Apulia and Molise. Growers decide the old varieties to be confirmed and the new varieties to be introduced.

Nico La Marca

FreshPlaza talked about it with Nico La Marca, North Apulia and Molise Development Manager at HM.CLAUSE, an expert in this segment and of the territory of reference.

"Among the new varieties on the market, there is Cusco F1, which we will commercialize for the second year running. It is an early variety with a short cycle of 60-65 days which adapts perfectly to August transplants to be harvested in October-November."

Cusco F1 was welcomed by producers thanks to some of its specific characteristics, including the early cycle, concentrated ripening period, dome shape, specific weight, good color and fine texture.

"Planning means forecasting how much produce will reach the processing warehouse and in what date it will become available so as to plan sales. Cusco F1 facilitates this job. What is more, its dome shape and small florets means it is elegant and appealing to consumers."

Cusco F1 is suitable for all those selling broccoli to the fresh produce market, either flowpacked or not. It is probably the only early broccoli variety suitable for industrial harvesting due to its concentrated ripening and high production levels, which drive harvesting costs down. Thanks to its spreading, it enables a better ventilation thus reducing the chance of dew spots during fall harvesting."

"Cusco F1 was 'born' in Foggia on September 18th 2020, when its concentrated ripening caught the attention of a grower, who started harvesting it while waiting for better-known varieties to develop. Cusco F1 is suitable for the international market and I am sure it will become popular."
