Frutas Montosa and ITC Packaging have made a commitment to back the development of new functional packaging being developed in the framework of the Guacapack project. The new packaging represents a commitment to circularity and the reuse of resources, recycling the waste generated by the transformation of avocados into guacamole. Through this agreement, Frutas Montosa will provide the waste needed for the development of this new material and, subsequently, support the market launch of those new sustainable packaging solutions.
The main objective of Guacapack is the development of a new biodegradable packaging system that will extend the shelf life of avocado-based foods by 15%. It is a new technology based on renewable sources that incorporates barrier labels to reduce the penetration of oxygen inside the packaging, as well as antioxidant additives from avocado waste.
Guacapack is a project funded by the AVI (Valencian Agency for Innovation) within the Program of Strategic Projects in Cooperation 2020. It is being developed by a consortium formed by ITC Packaging, Aimplas and the Analysis of Polymers and Nanomaterials research group of the University of Alicante (Nanobiopol-UA).
