O.P. Giuliano Puglia Fruit

Apulian cherry campaign seems satisfactory

Everyone knows it - cherries are the most awaited and flavorful fruit in spring and put everyone in a good mood. Harvesting started a few days ago in Apulia, the leading producer region, and FreshPlaza has talked about it with Nicola Giuliano, owner of O.P. Giuliano Puglia Fruit.

Nicola Giuliano

"We had not seen such loaded trees for years. Although the campaign is around one week late, it seems like it will be one of the best of the past few years when it comes to quality and quantity. At the moment, we manage to harvest between 40 and 50 thousand kg of Bigarreau cherries every day. The volumes are only distributed on the domestic market (€7-8/kg), as the variety is rather delicate and unsuitable for long transfers."

"Exports will start in around 10 days' time, when the Giorgia variety will ripen, then the season continue with Ferrovia. The high temperatures are hastening ripening, meaning we are capable of meeting the high demand of these first few days as well as recovering the delay caused by the cold April temperatures."

"This year, we are implementing technological machines that can scan each single cherry discarding those that do not meet the aesthetic and quality standards typical of Giuliano Puglia Fruit. This technology enables us to identify those cherries with external and internal defects that might lead to fruit decay after the fruit is packaged. This is ideal when it comes to European markets as, this way, we can avoid complaints and guarantee even better fruit."
