New important results in selecting the quality of citrus in South Australia

Mandarin Vision 3, Orange Vision 3 and Lemon Vision 3 are the latest evolution of Unitec vision systems for selecting the quality of mandarins, clementines, oranges and lemons. These systems are equipped with very high-resolution cameras that help selecting the quality of citrus fruits in a reliable way thus creating a strong efficiency in the process. This delicate and important process is carried out according to multiple parameters: external skin defects, shape defects, as well as weight, optical size and color and density of the fruit through the technology of the UNIQ range.

Venus Citrus, located in Loxton, South Australia, a family business that for three generations has been packing and marketing mandarins and other varieties of citrus fruit on the national and international market, exporting to over twenty countries in the world. In 2020 Venus Citrus chose to rely on Unitec for a line equipped with the Mandarin Vision 3 system for selecting the quality of mandarins, which is also able to sort lemons and oranges.

The installation and start-up of the line took place in the first half of 2020, amid the stage of emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In this delicate moment for the life of the packing house, Unitec support
was essential.

As General Manager of Venus Citrus Helen Aggeletos said: "The installation was… We were very nervous at the time because it was in the midst of the Covid and the Covid virus brought on a lot of moving targets so […] a number of technicians were coming to Loxton from Italy and that fell through but, the representatives here, they were amazing. They came up with local technicians and put on to Italy, they were talking constantly."

"We were able to pull out more fruit through the machine so we are able to confirm with the growers," said Fabio Spiniello, Venus Citrus Growers Liaison Officer. "and they are able to pick a lot more fruit, we are able to process a lot more fruit. So in the future, as expansion is happening out in the field, we are able to maintain better level of expansion of the product."

Therefore, the possibility to sort the product much faster than in the past combined with a considerable reliability in quality selection, an increase in production efficiency and the following increase in the percentage of the volume of sorted fruit and great delicacy in treating fruit. These are important steps forward, which were made possible thanks to Unitec technologies. These are competitive advantages that will help Venus Citrus seizing all future business opportunities, continuing to offer large retailers and final consumers a product of consistent quality over time. And these results are the fuel for Unitec that expresses its mission in its payoff - We work for your results.
