Table grape season to start early in Sicily

"The PGI table grape campaign in Mazzarrone will start rather early this year, around May 10th. Blossoming was helped by the favorable weather conditions, leading to perfect grapes and keeping millerandage operations to a minimum," reports Giovanni Raniolo, president of the consortium.

"While continental Italy was swept by a cold front over the past few days, the temperature range recorded in Mazzarrone has not affected our vineyards one bit, also because early varieties are grown in greenhouses. The first fruits will be delivered to international niche distributors then, as the campaign proceeds and quantities increase, it will be the turn of the domestic and foreign big retail chains."

"The first variety ready for harvesting is Black Magic, followed a few days later by the well-known and appreciated Victoria. Consumers are used to starting the table grape season with the prestigious PGI varieties from Mazzarrone. It would seem that volumes this year will be 5-10% higher than in 2020 which is significant, if we consider that these are the first European grapes of the season."

The season will also see a considerable presence of seedless varieties.

"The seedless segment is growing, with both white and red varieties being grown in Mazzarrone. Every start of the season, there is a lot of anticipation for our seedless grapes which, this year, will be harvested in early June. Vineyards grow year after year. The consortium supports traditional varieties, especially the Italia variety, but the possibility of commercializing seedless grapes meets the growing market demand."

The Consorzio di Tutela dell'Uva da Tavola di Mazzarrone Igp has also launched its new website, boasting a captivating graphic design, soft colors and in line with the topic of nature.
