This year's transition to Dutch greenhouse vegetables has been very smooth. "Contracts usually begin in week 18. But Spain left earlier because of quality and availability reasons. So, some buyers wanted to switch to Dutch products three weeks ago already," says JNV Produce's Johan Vrijland.
"The UK wants to switch as soon as possible. We, however, have to have products available. The weather's been cold here, and we haven't had as much sunlight as last year. During the first lockdown in March, we had beautiful weather. We can't say that this year,"
The British demand is concentrated on bell peppers, says Johan. "Those prices remain good for now. Spain is bringing a few newly harvested bell peppers onto the market. That's easing the demand a bit, but prices should stay level. They won't go completely through the roof. However, they won't get any cheaper either."
According to him, there's still limited demand for other greenhouse vegetables. These include cucumbers, tomatoes, and aubergines. "The cucumber market's particularly dramatic. It's too cold for good consumption, and there are enough cucumbers available. For an upturn, it needs to get much warmer. And the supply must decrease."
"Concerning tomatoes, the contracts for Moroccan and Canary imports expire this week. I think the market will stabilize then. This market, too, could use some more sunlight. Higher temperatures would be especially welcome to increase consumption," Johan concludes.
