A new premium brand for South African plums will soon be in the wholesale markets. The brand ‘Simply Gold’ will be supplied by UK importer Freshpro Imports.
“We are trailing a premium brand on loose plums for the wholesale and catering sector for late season plums from South Africa,” explains Chris Fagg from Freshpro Imports. “The plums will be the late season September Yummy variety, they are mid to dark red which ripens to a nice burgundy colour, with a pale-yellow flesh with a pinky red hue towards the skin. They have great brix levels around 18% which gives a superb eating experience.”
Freshpro are looking to trial this over the last few weeks of the South African season as a premium range in the wholesale markets with a plan to run it throughout next season, by selecting and packing only the varieties that hit the premium criteria of taste, appearance and shelf life.
“We have already put a couple of boxes out for our customers to try and feedback has been very positive. The trial will run through May and volumes will be limited this season.”
