Nearly 4,000 tons of pomelos are harvested each year in Corsica, and it is in April that the production reaches its peak.
Most French pomelos are produced on the island. “A particularity of the Star Ruby is that it is very juicy. The variety is produced mainly in Corsica,” explains producer Marie-Laure Monteil.
Since 2014, the rapidly expanding sector of the pomelo from Corsica benefits from a controlled label of origin AOC. The agricultural cooperative of Marie-Laure Monteil, located in San-Nicolao (Haute-Corse) should harvest almost 1,000 tons of citrus fruit in 2021.
The pomelo from Corsica is very popular in France, but there is also a very present European demand. According to Pierre-Paul Monteil, sales director of the cooperative, “the demand is mainly directed to the continent and mass distribution. The Benelux countries (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) are also buyers. The demand is split equally between the conventional and organic productions.”
