Garlic harvest is expected to commence earlier than usual

Chinese farmers in Shandong enter agricultural peak period

Production areas in Shandong have entered the peak period of agricultural activity. Laborers are busy bringing in the harvest of peppers and garlic shoots. The garlic is growing well this season, and the harvest season is expected to commence a few days earlier than in previous years, around the 20th of May.

According to Helen, spokesperson for Junan County Green Valley Foodstuffs Co., Ltd.: "The price of garlic has always dropped in recent years around the time fresh garlic entered the market, but this year is different. The price of Chinese garlic remains strong. The FOB price of packaged bags of garlic from last season is 905 USD per ton, while the price of 10-kg cardboard boxes of garlic is 1,000 USD per ton."

The shipping cost is still extremely high, despite a recent downward adjustment. Shipping one container from Qingdao to the USA or Canada costs around 7,000-8,000 USD. But importers and exporters are already used to these new prices. There is very little impact on the purchase volume.

When asked about garlic market trends in the next few weeks, Helen replied, "the order volume will rapidly expand when fresh garlic enters the market. The price is likely to slightly rise during this period, but we do not expect extreme prices."

Junan County Green Valley Foodstuffs Co., Ltd., mainly exports garlic, fresh ginger, and onions to the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
