Vietnamese border authorities have announced they will temporarily ban exporting vegetable to Cambodia at Kandal’s Chey Thom checkpoint. This is being done to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
According to Se Chhuntry, head of the Chrey Thom checkpoint, his Vietnamese counterparts took this decision despite his attempt to explain to them how successful the Cambodian government has been in curbing the virus. The outbreak that started this situation was the one at Doeurm Kor Market, the biggest vegetable wholesale market in Phnom Penh.
Vegetables are still being imported into Cambodia from Vietnam via another checkpoint along the border, in Takeo. Some 85 tonnes of vegetables are imported from Vietnam and 44 tonnes from Thailand per day. This figure covers Phnom Penh and eight other provinces only.
