New chem-free postharvest treatment for melons

"At Sanifruit we are aware of the need for melon growers to improve the shelf life of their products. The usual problem intrinsic to the production of fruit involves loss, browning and rot of the peduncle, which consequently implies recalls. That is why we are introducing a new chem-free postharvest treatment, in line with the company's ‘residue free’ philosophy, for a healthier and environmentally friendly fresh food industry."

"Sani-M & Sani-M L are formulated based on food-grade plant extracts, for application in drencher and in line, which act as protectors for the peel of the melon against external agents, reducing waste and avoiding dehydration. For best results, they can be applied together with two Sanifruit coatings with proven efficiency: Sani-RC and Sani-RC L."

"By applying these treatments melon producers will be able to obtain a series of benefits that lead to a greater profitability, with the consequent improvement of their brand image:

  • Slow down the senescence of melons, lowering it to values above 60% compared to untreated fruits.
  • Reduce weight loss and prevent dehydration.
  • Maintain the original appearance of the fruit, which is more attractive to the consumer.
  • Reduce both oxidations and brownings occurring on the peel of the melon.

All these benefits, together with the comfort and ease of application, make the new treatments a perfect solution for the post-harvest treatment of melons."

"At Sanifruit we have been working for more than 30 years to contribute to a sustainable and chem-free horticultural sector, and with this goal as the company's driving force, in recent years we have progressively expanded our product range. We started with citrus and then we continued with stone fruit, banana, plantain, and pome fruit. This year, we are proud to also be able to offer a treatment that improves the post-harvest life of melons. Thus, we manage to expand the possibilities of the sector in improving the quality of its fruit, while being respectful to the health of the consumer and the environment, by leaving no residues neither in the fruit itself nor in the waste water of the plants."
