Hebei is one of the most important pear production areas in China. The pear trees began to blossom in early April. Last year the weather was poor during the blossom season, so the production volume significantly declined. The volume of commercially viable fruit was limited and that is why the export price went up. This year the situation is different. Weather conditions are good and if nothing unexpected happens, then the harvest is likely to be abundant. The ratio of commercially viable fruit will be rather high this year.
"As for the pears in storage, the current reserves are 60% smaller than last year. And still the retail price is rather low in both the domestic market and the export market. The main reason for this situation is the pandemic. Although the outbreak of Covid-19 is largely under control in China, many overseas markets are still struggling. The Chinese export volume of pears is much smaller than in previous years. Only the beginning of Hari Raya stimulated Chinese pear exports." This is according to Mr. Zhao Small Lei.
At the same time, international shipping costs have shown frequent fluctuations in the last few months. The overall trend, however, is rising. After a period of explosive increase, the shipping price is now stable. But the shortage of shipping containers is still a challenge for the export industry. In general, the situation for refrigerated containers is slightly better than regular containers.
When asked about the competitive position of China in the international pear market, Mr. Zhao replied, "Chinese pears are very different from pear varieties in Europe, the USA, or South America. The taste of these pears is very different, and they are not likely to directly compete. And although Korean and Japanese pears are similar to Chinese pears, the latter have a price advantage. That is why China maintains a strong position in the international pear market."
