India: New APMC ruling against mango fraud

Consumers and producers of Konkan Alphonsoes have welcomed the Agricultural Produce Market Committee’s (APMC) order indicating that criminal proceedings will be initiated against sellers passing off hapus produced in Karnataka as ones from Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Palghar, Thane, Devgad and Raigad.

The Konkan hapus is considered to be superior in taste by mango experts, who have not taken being duped by sellers kindly. The Karnataka mangoes look similar to the ones grown in the Konkan region and are cheaper. Wholesalers and retailers pass it off as authentic and at similar rates, reportedly earning huge profits. The attractive and colourful packaging misleads buyers who are unable to tell the difference between the two varieties.

According to punemirror.indiatimes.com, the Alphonso mangoes from the coastal Konkan region also known as are called the King of Mangoes. It is one of the finest varieties specific to the regions of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Palghar, Thane, Devgad and Raigad.
