The reefer ship Kakariki has berthed at Eastland Port, to take in kiwifruit. The ship had to bypass Gisborne in mid-March and load Gisborne's first kiwifruit consignment of the season in Tauranga. The 1400 pallets it was to take from here had to be trucked over to the Mount instead. The ship was diverted due to berthing difficulties associated with the weather.
Gisborneherald.co.nz reported that, this time, there were no hitches. The Kakariki is designed particularly for transporting fruit and produce at managed temperatures. This maiden visit she will take NZ Fruits biggest ever single loadout of kiwifruit of 2,000 pallets and will sail on to load more cargo in Tauranga.
