On the Spanish island of Mallorca, Aldi Nord has reached a small milestone: the discounter has just opened its five thousandth supermarket in Europe. The new store - the 336th in Spain - is located in Cala Millor. The store opening is part of the discounter's ambitious expansion plans in Spain: the chain wants to open more than 40 new supermarkets there this year, Spanish media report.

New research from YouGov’s ‘International FMCG report 2021: Consumer goods in a Crisis’ provides an analysis of consumers’ attitudes to fast-moving goods across 17 global markets. The white paper is based on more than 18,000 interviews and explores how the COVID-19 crisis has affected the FMCG/CPG sector worldwide across a range of categories. The research finds that a majority of consumers in every market have changed their shopping habits in response to the pandemic, while more than half of consumers in 11 markets say they’ve altered their behaviours. In the UK, 6 in 10 Britons say they’ve switched up their food shopping routine (60%).
Uzbek chain MAKRO is ready to purchase goods from Kazakhstan
The management of the largest supermarket chain of Uzbekistan MAKRO, held a series of meetings with producers of food and other goods in Nur-Sultan and Almaty (Kazakhstan) in early April. More than 50 Kazakhstani producers took part in the meetings, including Maslodel, Bizhan, Tsesna, RG Brands, Kamerton, Raimbek, MPS and others. Agreements on cooperation in the promotion of Kazakhstani goods from all regions of Kazakhstan in the MAKRO chain were reached, ElDala.kz writes. There is a potential for cooperation projects in the food sector with goods like flour products, confectionery, fat and oil products, meat products, fruit and vegetables, as well as non-food products within the Center.
Persianas to buy Shoprite's Nigerian business, sources say
Nigerian property group Persianas is buying Shoprite’s Nigerian business after the South African retailer decided to retreat from other African markets, 3 banking sources told Reuters. Shoprite, with more than 2,300 stores across Africa, is awaiting regulatory approval on the sale of its Nigerian supermarket operation, though no further details about the deal have been disclosed.
UK: Online retailer warns of supply chain shortages
Online sustainable supermarket Approved Food is warning a “perfect storm” of Brexit, COVID-19, increased shipping costs and packaging issues could lead to serious disruption in the supply chain. Takeover rumours around Sainsbury's are once again abuzz as Czech investor Daniel Kretinsky has unexpectedly increased his stake in the British supermarket chain to 9.99%. Through his investment fund Vesa Equity Investments, businessman Daniel Kretinsky bought shares in Sainsbury's, the second largest supermarket chain in Great Britain, for 300mln pounds (345mln euros) last weekend. In doing so, the investor increased his stake from 3% to 9.99% and became the company's second largest shareholder after Qatar Holdings, whose shares he bought.
UK: Aldi launches package-free products trial
Aldi has launched a trial selling its first packaging-free products in its latest push to help customers shop more sustainably. The trial is available at one store in Ulverston, Cumbria, and if successful, Aldi said it would look to develop its refillable options in other stores in the future. The move could remove more than 130 tonnes - or more than 21mln pieces - of plastic annually from stores.
SoftBank-backed Grab agrees to deal to go public in world’s largest SPAC merger
Southeast Asia’s ride-hailing giant Grab is going public via a record-setting SPAC merger with Altimeter Growth Corp., valued at nearly $40bln. Grab will receive about $4.5bln in cash, which includes $4bln in a private investment in public equity arrangement. Upon completion of its merger, the SoftBank-backed company will trade on the Nasdaq under ticker symbol GRAB.

US: Walmart making majority of associates full-time
Walmart has revealed that by the end of the current fiscal year, the company anticipates that two-thirds of Walmart U.S. hourly store roles will be full-time with consistent schedules from week to week.
