For the strawberry producers of the French department of Lot-et-Garonne, 2020 was a black year. The closure of borders caused a shortage of seasonal workers from abroad and the impossibility of finding local labor resulted in several hundreds of hectares of strawberries that could not be harvested.
The 2021 strawberry season, however, looks promising, with the arrival of workers from Morocco. Since March, the Prefect, along with DIRECCTE and ARS, was able to set up an exceptional sanitary and administrative procedure for seasonal passes and long-stay visas, in collaboration with the French Office for Immigration and Integration (OFII) in Casablanca.
The protocol imposed by the Prefecture requires a PCR test upon departure from Casablanca, another test 2 days after their arrival, along with 7 days of quarantine and a final test at the end of the first day of harvest.
