Modigliani's variety Pir5 farm in Cesenatico

Strawberries from Romagna are about to be harvested

The Romagna strawberries (an early variety of protected cultivation) are beginning to turn red, to the point that in a few days harvesting can begin. One of the companies that are already close to starting is Modigliani Frutta from Cesenatico (Forlì-Cesena), which grows Pir 5.

"It is one of the best varieties in terms of aroma and taste, at least that is my experience. This year strawberries are grown in greenhouses as well as in open field, but those growing outside will be covered with polytunnels," said the owner Davide Modigliani.

Last week's frost hit the first flowers. "There was some damage from the frost. This will not affect the final quantity so much, but will slightly delay the start of the season. However, this is the second year in a row that frost has delayed our harvest. Even in the greenhouse, the temperature has dropped below zero."

"The frost has not caused damage everywhere. Apricot blossoms have been so abundant that even if there is some damage, some thinning will still be needed. With regard to peaches and nectarines, we will be able to provide an estimate in a few days, but the damage is limited."
