Uniban, the international banana marketer, closed 2020 with positive figures that reflect double-digit growth. Last year the company registered an 18% growth in banana exports, selling a total of 44 million boxes of 20 kilos each.
The company also increased the volume of its plantain exports by 13.6% shipping 2.9 million boxes of 25 kilos each. The snacks business also grew by 24%, achieving sales of 1,435 tons.
“In addition to presenting the production and commercialization figures, which are obviously very important, Uniban wants to highlight the continuity of our operation and of the social and environmental work that we carried out last year amid the COVID-19 emergency. Currently, we generate more than 6,244 direct and indirect jobs, including our subsidiaries, such as Agricola Sara Palma, Agricola Uberaba, and Polyban," stated the president of Uniban, Juan Luis Cardona Sierra.
He also said that last year, they had invested $ 10,500 million through the Foundation to improve the quality of life of more than 42,000 people, including banana workers, banana producers, and their families. In addition, Uniban donated $ 1,776 million to attend the emergency and gave away substantial quantities of plantains and bananas to the most vulnerable populations of Uraba and Magdalena in the midst of the pandemic.
Moreover, last year Uniban reduced its generation of ordinary waste by 22%, decreasing its impact on the Urabá regional landfill, and lowered its water consumption by 10%.
