Demand exceeds supply

Spring onions from Egypt already sold

Unlike what happens with fruit, the commercialization of vegetables is often characterized by the lack of certain products. Such is the case of spring onions, which are currently lacking in Europe due to a series of climatic and production factors.

Biagio Annunziata, sales manager for import-export company La Fenice, founded in 1995, reports: "We have noticed that demand for spring onions from Egypt and Italian has increased exponentially over the past three weeks, leading to an increase in prices. They are popular particularly with retailers and German wholesale markets."

According to the expert, the lack of produce is due to various factors: "The large cooperative PfalzMarkt is late with leek harvesting, which usually starts on March 8th-9th. This is because of the low temperatures registered in March as well as, maybe, to a delay in transplants due to uncertainties caused by the pandemic. Many of the plots that used to be left for the following year are almost empty and have already been harvested."

"We are pleased as importers, because this week we have managed to meet the requests from our partners (who were not ready for a lack of leek volumes). Four containers are arriving on March 30th from Alexandria, so deliveries should be punctual for Easter."

The produce is arriving in pallets containing 200 packets with 180x80 pellets, containing cardboard crates holding 14 bunches with a weight of 120g+ (an evident sign of the general lack of produce) in bags that are blast chilled and hold the GlobalGAP certification.

Spring onion production started in late November and La Fenice will have produce available for at least another week, as the season of spring onions destined abroad - and especially to Germany where the domestic produce is lacking - extended to beyond March 10th.

"This way, we have a strategic position and manage to bridge the gap between Egypt and the various European countries, also thanks to our collaborations with Egyptian growers."

"For next year, we are working on agreements for an increase in production with our own dedicated packaging and intensifying arrivals to the Salerno, Ravenna and Gioia Tauro ports."
