The market supply volume is currently limited

Chinese pineapple season began late in Hainan, due to cold winter

Hainan is one of the most suitable places in China for the production of pineapples. The overall surface area devoted to pineapple plantation in Hainan exceeds 16,667 hectares. The annual production volume is stable around 500,000 tons with a value of more than 1.5 billion yuan [230 million USD]. Hainan produces classical Bali pineapples as well as Jinzuan pineapples and "Tian mimi [very sweet]" pineapples. This season the supply season began somewhat later than usual, because the weather last year was exceptionally cold. The pineapples will enter the market 10-14 days later than last year. The current market supply volume is extremely limited. The market conditions are quite alright. Consumer demand exceeds market supply. The price of "Bali" pineapples is around 2 yuan [0.31 USD] per 0.5 kg, while the price of "Jinzuan" pineapples is around 5-6 yuan [0.76-0.92 USD] per 0.5 kg. That is a new record average for this year.

"We specialize in the supply of small Jinzuan pineapples. The flavor of small pineapples is quite good and not inferior to large pineapples in any way. Taiwanese pineapples were recently prohibited on the Chinese market. That is one of the reasons why the price of Chinese pineapples went up. The price increase was smaller for small pineapples compared to medium and large pineapples. The price per pineapple did not rise by more than 0.5 yuan [0.08 USD]. However, the sales volume is much larger than last year." This is according to Mr. Wu Bin, a spokesperson for Kyo (Hainan) Agricultural Development Co., Ltd.

Mr. Wu Bin further explained: "We started selling small Hainan pineapples several years ago. At that time, we mainly sold to e-commerce platforms like Hema. The price of small pineapples is relatively low, which suits the conditions for e-commerce. The largest pineapple supplier in Hainan is 'Hainan Tiandiren Ecological Agriculture Co., Ltd.' (hereafter 'Tiandiren'). They began promoting gift boxes of small pineapples last year. We work closely together with Tiandiren to supply the market and WeChat traders with gift boxes of small pineapples."
