The frosts caused by a sharp drop in temperatures last weekend impacted fruit production in different parts of Spain.
In the Region of Murcia, the frosts ruined the entire apricot production and a large part of the almond production in the districts of Caravaca, affecting the orchards of other municipalities in the Northwest region.
Temperatures fell to -3° C in Barranda (Caravaca), -2.6° C in Chaparral (Cehegin), and to -4.9° C in La risca reservoir in Moratalla. "There are quite a few areas where all the apricot was lost, as has happened with the almond, especially in the highest points of the districts of Caravaca," stated the president of the Frutas Caravaca cooperative, Juan Pedro Martinez. "The flowering was quite advanced and the frosts have ruined things for farmers," he added.
Faced with these losses, farmers have once again demanded better insurance for this type of inclement weather.
