Global citrus company shares their water initiatives to celebrate World Water Day

In their four origins, San Miguel carries out different actions and programs to manage water resources efficiently and responsibly. "Every March 22, World Water Day is celebrated, a moment that invites us to reflect on the responsible use of this natural resource, that is necessary and essential for the development of life. In San Miguel we work every day in our four origins to carry out a balanced and sustainable management," the company shares.

One of the most critical issues on the water agenda is the lack of access to water suffered by thousands of people around the world. In Argentina, and together with different institutions, San Miguel leads an initiative aimed at ensuring access to running water in three rural areas of the province of Tucumán: La Calera, Monte Grande and Caspinchango.

The program reaches 100 people distributed in 80 households and impacts on their health & hygiene conditions, but in particular the women of these communities that are typically designated to tasks such as cleaning and water transportation.

In South Africa, the company has installed systems to capture rain water and monitor its quality to provide drinkable water to their workers. Furthermore, they have installed water tanks and a purification system to supply the Mfuleni community.

Whereas in Peru, they carry out several actions to assure a sustainable water use as a part of the Water Footprint program. "We covered our water reservoir to avoid evaporation, replaced water hoses with more efficient systems and developed shared value projects with our communities to manage this resource," says the company.

Finally, in Uruguay, they have implemented watering automation in nurseries to optimize water use and cover the needs of each plan in an efficient way. These 15-minute irrigation laps throughout the day helped minimize water waste from runoff.

"This is how we are deploying actions with the goals of using water responsibly and raising awareness about the importance that this resource has for the sustained development of communities," the company concludes.
