Packaging needs and trends are constantly evolving, especially in the produce industry, where packaging is integral to ensuring the protection and shelf-life of a product. With a centennial anniversary in the agriculture industry coming up, packaging company Sambrailo has witnessed many changes throughout the decades and has evolved alongside the customer.
Sara Lozano shares: “Our packaging lines have gone through many changes and updates throughout the years. Improving the transportation and shelf-life of fruits and vegetables has always been a goal with each update. In the 80’s and 90’s, we created our iconic Mixim® clamshells with smooth walls and a system designed for optimum airflow. Since then, we’ve also designed packaging for larger weights for club store packs, and snack packaging for consumer convenience. Today, our focus is on providing sustainable packaging choices for all fruit and vegetable categories.”
Sustainable packaging: ReadyCycle®
The past year has slightly altered the course of packaging trends due to specific concerns that were brought on by the pandemic. “The concerns of food safety were re-highlighted in the past year, and I don’t think this will be a short-term trend; it is here to stay,” says Lozano. Despite this, Lozano points out that consumers are also still looking for environmentally friendly options: “With the high numbers of packages being delivered to consumers’ homes, consumers have been seeing the curbside trash and recycling bins filling up faster as we have all been staying home. This has created more awareness of how much plastic is being created, and it is a concerning factor for many. That is why alternatives to plastics – packaging options that have a positive environmental impact – will continue to be needed.”
In order to meet this need, Sambrailo has their ReadyCyle packaging line, which has been successfully marketed in recent years. “We continue to receive great feedback from our customers and community about ReadyCycle as well as about expanding the line for more categories such as citrus, stone fruit, row crop vegetables, micro-greens and more. We are diligently working on creating designs that are in high demand from the consumer, retailer and grower. That alignment is so important when introducing a new packaging item, let alone in a sustainable packaging material,” says Lozano.
“For us, being a part of the conversation and providing solutions and ownership of change in our industry is really important to us. Understanding the economies’ demands and our environments’ needs and trying to make our customers packaging needs simple is always at the top of our minds,” Lozano concludes.
