New building for ORCA and Rotom Tomatoes in Belgium

On Monday, two Belgian companies started construction on their new warehouses/office space. ORCA and Rotom Tomatoes' new building will not only have 15 loading docks. It will also boast 1,500m² of dispatching area. And 2,800m² and 3,700m² warehouses, one for packaging, the other for refrigeration. "Construction has just begun," says Roel De Winter of ORCA. "We hope to move in early 2022. Everything's in place. The building will be state-of-the-art. It will have solar panels for generating sustainable energy."

“Our two companies are currently at two separate, nearby locations. But we're growing and need extra space. Rotom and Orca are separate entities. My brother owns Rotom, and the companies complement each other well. Rotom specializes in fruiting vegetables. ORCA is rather strong in Belgian Endives, open-field endive, and asparagus. We're, therefore, absolutely not competitors. The new premises provide a lot of extra space. That means we can work more efficiently. We also already have an option on an extra 12,000m² plot. So, we're definitely ready for the future."

Asparagus season has started again
At ORCA, the asparagus season has started again. "The large volumes are still a ways away. We expect them around Easter. Demand is currently picking up, and prices are good. The grades that usually go to the hospitality industry are also selling for good prices. That shows that more people are using asparagus at home. The supply's not great yet. No thanks to the gloomy weather. It could be a bit sunnier and warmer," concludes Roel.
