Kenneth Meyer (Natural Tropic):

"Spanish avocado season to end early"

The Spanish avocado season is nearing its end. "That means the season will end much earlier than in other years. We usually continue until April or May. But now, we'll keep going until the end of the month at most," says Natural Tropic sales manager Kenneth Meyer in Malaga, Spain.

"Pre-harvest forecasts already showed that these would be lower than last year. However, the eventual harvest was much lower. Avocado sales went well, albeit with fits and starts. Chile and Israel had lower production, so there was more demand for Spanish avocados."

"There were also noticeably few smaller sizes available this year. There is normally an abundance of sizes 26 to 32. But this season, there were far fewer of those," Kenneth says. "Prices have been fairly stable but never sky-high. Now, as the season draws to a close, prices are rising a little. They're currently at about €15 to €16." Natural Tropic is now switching to import avocados. Then they can continue supplying its regular clients.

The Spanish kumquat season is almost over too. "Kumquat sales peak at around Christmas. Cherimoyas are still selling well. Their production lagged for a long time. That was due to the cold, rainy weather. Their trade has, however, picked up again. Consumption is good, especially in Spain. And the regular export orders continue to go well," Kenneth concludes.
