“Demand for Egyptian citrus has improved recently”

China and India have been importing large volumes of Egyptian citrus. After a slow period where demand was rather weak, demand has now picked up and shipments are sent to both of these regions, as well as Senegal, Malaysia and Singapore. Volumes are already higher than last season, thanks to new markets in Brazil and Japan.

There have been a lot of improvements for the Egyptian citrus season over the past few weeks, says Mostafa Adel, owner of MMA Fresh Produce: “The orange season in Egypt has been rather calm over the past two months. The biggest reason for this was lower demand from countries like India and China. Luckily the situation has improved as nowadays demand is a lot stronger. We’ve started doing shipments to India and China mainly, but also send shipments to Senegal, Malaysia and Singapore.”

According to Adel, the quantities of the exported oranges are already higher for the season than last year’s totals. “The volumes are already higher this season than they were last year. This is mostly due to good weather and not as much rain. This means both quantity and quality are in a very good place at the moment. It’s a very big difference between this season compared to last season, as the prices are not as high as they were last year. This means the oranges can now be sold in all markets with all targeted categories.”

Once the citrus season is concluded, MMA Fresh Produce will focus on their onion season. “Like I stated before, our most important markets remain China and India as they are every year. They take on the largest percentage of volumes. Adding both Europe and the two new markets Japan and Brazil has made it so Egyptian citrus is now on the top of the world citrus trade. After the citrus season we’ll be focusing on onions, which is the second product that our company targets for exports. Frozen strawberries will also be one of the interesting products for Europe and many other regions as well. But first we have to give it our all and finish the citrus season properly!” Adel concludes.
