Air-cleaning technology helps with storage challenges

To prevent the fast softening of papayas along with citrus mold issues, Papayas & More invested in Bio Turbo air-cleaning technology and has since managed to overcome other storage challenges such as cross-contamination.

Papayas & More was born in 1970, exporting fruits to the United States and later to Canada. Besides growing and distributing papayas, the company deals in other citrus fruit and bananas. Five years ago, the fruit exporter improved storage conditions in its McAllen, TX facility by upgrading it with patented Miatech equipment for removing ethylene and pathogens.

“Before installing Bio Turbo, we had some challenges with the fast softening of our produce, as well as mold issues,” said Jesus Gonzalez, operations manager. “After we installed Bio Turbo systems, we extended the lifespan of our papayas and eliminated mold concerns of our lemons and limes.”

Bio Turbo has also proved useful when storing different fruit in one cold room. “We became more flexible in terms of storing our produce,” said Gonzalez. “With Bio Turbo, you can store mixed produce in the same area since the air is ethylene and bacteria-free, so there are no chances of cross-contamination.”

Bio Turbo is a patented technology manufactured in the United States by Clackamas, OR-based Miatech. It effectively cleans the storage atmosphere of ethylene gas and airborne pathogens. “What differentiates Bio Turbo from competitors is its affordability and the ease of maintenance making it a great solution for commercial applications”.
