New Dekopon mandarin meets good consumer demand

The California citrus season has been going strong these past months with good volumes and strong demand. California-based Trinity Fruit launched a new variety of mandarin this season and the company has been seeing a good response from consumers.

First season for the Dekopon variety
Trinity Fruit offers a wide variety of citrus options, but this year they have added a new variety of mandarin to their line-up: the Dekopon variety. “This is the first season we are harvesting the Dekopon variety,” says Angela Hernandez, adding: “We are launching them under our new Big Honeys® brand, which was created specifically for this varietal.”

The harvest for Dekopons started mid-February. “They have a short harvest window, wrapping up in April, but it is well worth every bite,” says Hernandez. “The season has been going well so far for these. Volumes are continuing to grow as we learn more about this variety and its high demand from consumers,” she adds.

So, what makes Dekopons unique? Hernandez explains: “The variety has a ‘top knot’ at the top of the fruit that makes it easy to start peeling it – it is very easy to peel this variety. The size of this variety is big, about the size of a softball, and the flavor is super sweet.” In addition to this, the variety also boasts great health benefits, something that has been top-of-mind for consumers in the past year. “The common size for this variety gives consumers their daily vitamin C intake, so that’s a plus!” Hernandez says.

Stone fruit season coming up
In addition to their citrus line-up, Trinity Fruit is also anticipating the start of their stone fruit season. “Stone fruit season is right around the corner and we can hardly wait to get our summer products on the shelf,” Hernandez concludes.
