Ferrante Fragole is looking forward to the start of the strawberry campaign in about 15 days

PGI certification is still a long way off for the Favetta strawberry

The PGI label (Protected Geographical Identification) would be an extra boost for the Favetta strawberry and would mean greater recognition on the national markets. It would generate added value for this niche product.

Due to climatic changes over the past few weeks, the harvest is expected to begin in about fifteen days and end in mid-June. Since it is a niche production, it sells very well, especially at the beginning, with production prices ranging between 6-7 €/kg. In addition, Slovenian markets are extremely satisfying in terms of both demand and quotations. The latter have increased by 50% compared to markets in central and southern Italy," said Roberto Ferrante of Ferrante Fragole.

Our 2020 strawberry campaign was not very satisfying, because of the coronavirus and the lockdown negative impact, but we hope this year's campaign will be different. The pandemic has had a terrible effect on many strawberry grower. During the early stages of the previous season, when the prices are most advantageous for producers, Slovenia withdrew with a consequent loss in value of about 20%. However, we survived because we were able to process about 600 kg per day by delivering door-to-door, but other strawberry growers handed over the Favetta at 95 cents/kg to the charity, so that it could go to people in economic difficulty."

In order to increase the seasonality of strawberry consumption and prolong its availability on the market, Ferrante Fragole has started to produce artisanal jams. The company harvests strawberries when they are fully ripe and with a high sugar content.

"Being a small company, with a production area of about 8 hectares and with the intent to shorten the production chain, we will focus in the coming years on processed products and jams. The intention is to focus on artisanal processing and small quantities, in order to guarantee a high quality product. E-commerce and gourmet shops will be the commercial channels for these products," concluded Federica Ferrante.
