After seven years of negotiations, Colombia and Chile have reached an agreement to export Colombian Hass avocado to the Chilean market.
"We were able to agree on the work plan for the export of Colombia's Hass avocado to the Chilean market thanks to the phytosanitary surveillance work carried out by the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) and the actions of the farms and packing plants' technical teams," stated Deyanira Barreo Leon, the general manager of the ICA.
Rodolfo Zea Navarro, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that “Colombian agriculture continues to conquer markets at the international level. Our avocados will arrive in Chile, a destination that will increase the demand for this national product, which in 2020 reached 24 countries.”
According to the Colombian Ministry of Agriculture, in 2020 that country exported 87,000 tons of Hass avocado to the Netherlands, Spain, England, France, the United States, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates, among other destinations. Colombia also reached agreements with China and Japan.
Now, Chilean authorities must carry out an administrative process that includes a verification visit and the activation of the work plan.
