The EU's production of fresh fruits and vegetables fell by 2.5% in 2019

According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for 2019, the production of fresh fruits and vegetables in the EU decreased by 2.5% over 2018, totaling 166.3 million tons. Of that figure, a total of 100.9 million corresponded to vegetables and 65.4 million to fruits.

This decline was due to the slight setbacks in production in Spain, Italy, and France, the three leading producers in the EU. Spain produced 31.1 million tons in 2019 (-4% over 2018), Italy produced 27.5 million tons (-3%), and France produced 20.6 million tons (-3.2%). In addition, Poland, the EU's fifth-largest producer, experienced a 13% decrease in 2019, placing its production at 14.5 million euro.

In 2019 the production of fresh fruit and vegetables grew in Germany, the fourth-largest producer in the EU, and the Netherlands, the sixth-largest producer. Germany produced 15 million tons (+ 3% over 2018) and the Netherlands 11 million tons (+ 9%).

The EU's production of fresh fruit and vegetables accounted for 9% of the 1,837 million tons of fresh fruits and vegetables produced worldwide in 2019.
