The Qatar Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has stated that the ‘Qatar Farms Programme' and ‘Premium Qatar Farms Programme' have helped sell over 3,752 tons of local vegetables in January. More than 3,265 tons of vegetables were sold out under Qatar Farms Programme, and the Premium Qatar Farms Programme contributed in selling 487 tons of vegetables.
The sale of premium Qatari vegetables grew by 61 percent, recording 487 tons vegetables in January 2021 as compared to 302 tons in January 2020. The vegetables sold through the Qatar Farm Programme saw a 52 percent increase, from 2,141 tons in January 2020 to 3,265 tons in January 2021.
The local product marketing programmes aim to improve the local marketing method for Qatari vegetables, increase demand and reduce waste from production to a minimum, as well as to increase the income of Qatari farms to increase investment in the agricultural sector, and the availability of local vegetables in consumer complexes over the course of Year.
The programmes are run by MME in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry at major commercial outlets like Lulu Hypermarkets, Al Meera, Family Food Center, Carrefour among many more. Both the programmes enable local farms to supply their produce to commercial outlets without middlemen.
