Situation of greenhouse crops in Almería in the first week of February

As outlined in the report on the situation of the crops from the Studies and Statistics Service of the General Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Food of the Government of Andalusia, corresponding to the week of February 1 to 7, 2021, the greenhouses of Níjar have continued to uproot crops that were programmed for a long cycle due to declining profitability, which is, in turn, a result of the cold of previous weeks. Because of this, spring cycles have been transplanted.

In the tomato greenhouses, the damage caused by the cold and rain recorded weeks ago was still visible.

In the eggplant greenhouses, following the halt in the growth due to the cold, new buds and flowers have started to appear again.

Zucchini plants are having a hard time recovering, and there were still some frozen fruits. Other greenhouses reported post-harvest problems due to excess moisture.

In cucumber greenhouses, there are still many short cucumbers left. The rising temperatures and humidity these days will likely facilitate the appearance of mildew. There were already melon and watermelon plantations with branches coming out from under the blanket or tunnel. With the arrival of the first flowers, the plan is to introduce the bee hives in one or two weeks. Greenhouses were still being planted.

Poniente Almeriense
In the greenhouses of the county Poniente Almeriense, the harvests of all kinds of peppers were still underway and the earliest peppers continued to be removed. The Lamuyo and Italian types are usually left as a single crop.

The harvesting of all types of tomatoes also continued. Fall plantings were being removed and spring plantings were in every state, from just planted to just starting to harvest.

The long-cycle eggplant plantations continued to be harvested, with better productions due to the higher temperatures. New plantings were being carried out.

The growth of the new cucumber plantations continued ahead of the spring campaign for the long, French and short types.

The winter zucchini varieties were being harvested. Some early plantings have been removed to plant melons, watermelons or new zucchini.

The melon and watermelon plantings had started, with these protected by a thermal blanket. The earliest melons, especially the Cantaloupe and Galia, have already been transplanted.
