For 40 years, the Staiger food wholesaler has been supplying the heart of Baden-Württemberg in the Stuttgart area with fresh produce and more. As far as organic products are concerned, the company located at the wholesale market is still in its starting phase, but is ambitiously looking ahead because its customers are demanding it. The annual turnover is about 50 million euros. So far, three per cent of this is offered concerns organic goods. The management told BioPress that they are now constantly trying to increase the share because of the increased demand.

To this end, the company maintains direct relations with the countries of origin and cultivates contacts in the surrounding area and with producers in the region. One problem at the moment is that it is currently necessary for the traders to label the goods or have them labelled. So far, one producer in Spain has set a good example. "But there is certainly room for improvement," says Bernd Wemlinger, who is responsible for purchases at Staiger.
Organic salads and vegetables are increasingly in demand in the out-of-home sector and are supplied by the Bio Manufaktur in Heimsheim. In addition, the company has "actually always" worked with two organic fruit and vegetable wholesalers.
