Early, organic green asparagus from Italy

For 2021, Primo Asparago, part of Orto Veneto ,will increase its acreage of greenhouse asparagus in order to meet more customers' needs. "The new plants in the heated greenhouses will go into production this year, increasing the yield by 40% compared to last year. In addition, we are increasing the area with asparagus in the field, which will provide a 30% increase," explained the manager Lorenzo Moro.

All asparagus is grown organically. "In addition to Italy, we are entering the market of premium organic products in Poland, through a business partner. Other countries include Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. We plan to start harvesting and delivering the first batches in week 8. The asparagus plant is scheduled to be heated by 4-5 February, and we plan to start harvesting by 23-24 February 2021," continued Moro.

The first customers, mainly from Germany and Poland, have already placed orders. In Italy, the asparagus is sold through wholesalers in the markets of Milan, Padova and Verona.

The Orto Veneto horticultural company was created through a collaboration between a number of key operators in the sector. It markets early-harvest cultivation with reduced environmental impact and, since 2020, has been certified organic (see FreshPlaza of 01/14/2020).

The asparagus will be offered in tips and in bunches of various guaranteed sizes and weights, ranging in caliber between 12 to 16 mm, and from 16-20 mm to 20+.

The asparagus is grown in heated greenhouses and the plants are irrigated with hot water obtained from a clean renewable energy plant. This is a so-called carbon neutral circuit that heats the ground via an underground system above 18 degrees, which makes it possible to start harvesting quality asparagus as early as February.
