Although 2019 marked a first hiatus in the uninterrupted growth of organic banana imports for the US market, 2020 is breaking all records. The import growth has made a fantastic recovery, with the market up by 15 % over the first 11 months of the year from the same period of 2019 and 2018.
It seems that 2019 was only a bump on the road, linked to a fall in production from the US market’s main supplier, Ecuador. That nation registered a 12 % drop from 2018. While in 2020 Ecuador did no more than regain levels just about on a par with 2018 (+ 1 % between January and November), growth was driven by the boom in Mexican volumes, which registered a rise of 48 %, with the sector making huge and continuous progress since the second half of 2019.
According to an article on fruitrop.com, the Covid crisis does not seem to have posed any problems to continued growth for the organic banana market.
