Malaysia: Floods cause 79 pineapple smallholders to suffer RM2.9 million in losses

The floods that hit Malaysia early this year have resulted in 79 pineapple smallholders incurring RM2.9 million in losses (€580,000) when their farms -totalling 62.6 hectares- were adversely affected.

According to Malaysia Pineapple Industry Board (MPIB) chairman Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal, the affected pineapple farms were spread over 20 districts in six states, with Pahang being the worst affected, followed by Johor and other states such as Terengganu, Kelantan, Perak and Selangor.

Dr Sahruddin said with aid from the Agriculture Disaster Fund, the smallholders’ pineapple cultivation will hopefully be on the road to recovery and able to meet the domestic and international market demand which was slightly affected by the floods.
