According to the Luxembourg Ministry, 177 hectares were used for vegetable production in that country last year, and this by just 88 farms. Of these, only 15 percent of the area was used by ten 'certified organic' farms, l'Essentiel reports.
The area under cultivation is not huge, but over the past 20 years, the area used for vegetable production has increased steadily. For example, in 2000, only 16 hectares were used for vegetables and strawberries. Twenty years later, the area had grown elevenfold.
In the same period, the number of farms in this area has grown from seven to 88. That is, today there are twelve times more vegetable producers than twenty years ago.
