According to data from the Ministry of Commerce, there has been a downturn in the Myanmar onion export market. The country exported just over 100,000 tonnes, earning over $48 million, for the 2019-2020 financial year.
Some farmers used the excess onions on their farms, with those owning cattle and chickens mulching them into compost to make fertilizer. One such farmer, who decided to rid his warehouse of onions on January 5, told mmtimes.com: “I've accepted the loss on these onions. I'm just looking forward to next year now, as this year is a total write-off. I am not angry, just sad.”
