Price remains stable

Chinese strawberries from Dandong will enter peak sales period in February

Dandong is one of China's largest strawberry production areas with an annual production volume of more than 200,000 tons of strawberries. The soil and water levels in the area are extremely suitable for strawberry production. Dandong is where the river and the sea meet, and more than 70% of the area is covered by forests. Furthermore, the temperature difference between night and day is big, which means that fruit easily accumulates sugars. The first Dandong strawberries of the season had already entered the Chinese market in December, but the production season continues until around May. Current market prospects are good.

Strawberries

Chinese market demand for Dandong strawberries always grows in the period leading up to Chinese Spring Festival [12 February, 2021]. After Spring Festival the price drops. The current price of Dandong strawberries is between 25-35 yuan [3.85-5.39 USD] per 0.5 kg. The actual price depends on the product variety and product quality. The price level is more or less the same as last year. Although the overall conditions in the Chinese fruit market are not great, Dandong strawberries seem unaffected.

Strawberries

"Unlike many other fruits, one of the main retail channels for strawberries is to invite customers into the plantation to pluck their own strawberries. However, the outbreak of Covid-19 has made this nearly impossible. That is why strawberries sold poorly in the period leading up to Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020] last year." This is according to Wang Bin, a Dandong strawberry farmer.

According to Mr. Wang: "The spread of Covid-19 is already brought under control in China. If nothing unexpected happens, we think the sales season will look very different from last year. We expect a small peak sales period in February."
