The start of the new year signals the return of a special citrus variety: Sumo Citrus®. This citrus variety, which originates from Japan, is grown in the Central Valley of California. The harvest kicked off in late December and limited shipping began on January 4th.
10th season of Sumo Citrus®
With shipping for Sumo Citrus having kicked off last week, growers and retailers are gearing up for the season. Scott Owens, GM of Suntreat, shares: “Sumo Citrus are notoriously difficult to grow. Our dedicated farmers have to put in the right amount of focus and attention to make sure that we are producing the highest eating quality fruit that our customers have grown to love through the years.”
This year will mark the 10th Sumo Citrus season in store, and with the overall increased citrus demand seen by retailers everywhere, they are expecting a great season this year. “We have seen an increase in citrus demand throughout the past year, and we are looking forward to continuing to provide our high-quality citrus throughout the 2021 season,” Owens shares.
Highlighting the health benefits
Despite the fact that the variety is notoriously difficult to grow, its unique characteristics work to increase demand. “In addition to its high levels of vitamin C and overall health benefits, Sumo Citrus is enormous, easy to peel, super sweet and seedless, making for the ultimate citrus eating experience,” Owens concludes.
