"We invite Yoann Alarçon to taste our strawberries"

Chairman of Freshuelva responds to statement on strawberries from Carrefour France

Yoann Alarçon, fresh produce manager of Carrefour France, recently announced on his Twitter account that the supermarket chain would not offer strawberries in January. In his tweet, he also gave the reasons for this new policy, referring mainly to the strawberries from Africa. "They are not seasonal. They don't have any taste. Instead, we have delicious citrus fruits, kiwis from France and nice crunchy apples on the shelves."

He also announced that strawberries would be back in the supermarket in mid-February, as soon as the first Spanish strawberries are ripe, followed by the French ones in spring.

The president of Freshuelva, Alberto Garrocho, immediately responded: "The strawberries from Huelva are already a top quality product in January, reaching a maximum of 13 Brix degrees. Our weather conditions at this time of the year in our region are good for the crop. The low temperatures slow down the fruit's ripening, so this is exposed to more hours of sunlight, which has a direct impact on the taste.”

He therefore invites the fresh manager of Carrefour France to taste the strawberries from Huelva and ascertain the excellent quality and taste of a product that certainly deserves its place on the shelves of the supermarket chain. "We are in the middle of the strawberry season, which started already in mid-December. That cannot be said of the kiwis or apples, either in France, nor anywhere in Europe," says Alberto Garrocho.
