The Western Railway will start transporting fruits and vegetables from the region of South Gujarat to various parts of the country in special coaches, starting on January 15. During a survey conducted last week, South Gujarat growers showed special interest in railway transportation.
Railway officials said that the food processing ministry is also subsidizing the fruit traders, which will benefit the traders as well. It costs about Rs 32,000 (€350) to send 10 tonne of fruits through road, but the railway charges Rs 16,000 for every 10 tons.
